I've always like two things: helping leaders make their vision real - and helping people build careers along the way.
Vision and strategy become real when the structure, the goals, and the rewards all point in the same direction and the right people are in the right seats. Most strategies don't fail on the whiteboard. They fail because the organization underneath wasn't built to deliver them.
I learned that in my corporate operating roles. I was Chief Human Resources Officer at Verifone, a $2 billion payments company, and at enterprise software company CentralSquare. Earlier I helped build the organizations behind PayPal's organic revenue doubling and Bank of America tripling revenue through M&A. I've had the good fortune to work with and learn from some exceptional leaders along the way.
Since 2018 I've run Shaw Organization Design, working with CEOs and CHROs on the organization their strategy needs — and stepping into interim HR executive roles when needed.
My approach is best judged by those who shared the recommendations below in my profile, but a word that keeps coming up is balance. I listen, and then I push. I stay calm, and I still move fast. I'll work the strategy with your C-suite and the spreadsheet with your analyst.
Outside the business, I serve on the executive compensation committee for the board of El Camino Health, a $1.6 billion not-for-profit health system in Silicon Valley. I also serve on the Executive Volunteer Corps for Nonprofits First. I have a passion for supporting education that has included being a guest instructor in college courses and founding a scholarship at Drake for future STEM teachers.
If you're building something and the organization underneath isn't ready for it yet, that's the conversation I like having.
